Okay, if you are of a certain generation, you do.

For those who are Millennials and younger, let me say it this way— Delete, trash, reject.

If you do not want your cover letter and/or resume to go into the “trash can” then consider these tips:

  1. Accuracy matters- Mispelled words…. Oops MISSPELLED words, blatant grammatical errors and erroneous information – TRASH!
  2. Appearance matters – There are numerous formats for resume composition. The key is to be neat, clean and consistent. Leave some white space. Sloppy appearance, scratch outs, strikeovers and crowded information – TRASH!
  3. Be deliberate. Customize your resume thereby allowing the reviewer to easily see the skills and experience you bring to the position. Too much information that does not relate – TRASH!

The beauty of this generation is that you have everything at the drop of a hat. (Millennial language) Click of a mouse, touch of a pad or strike of a key. In other words, gone are the days of carbon paper and white-out (Actually white-out is still being sold and I confess I do have a couple of bottles in my dress drawer, but I know I’m not alone).

The point is, with today’s modern technology one can quickly customize and tailor their documents with little effort. But don’t get sloppy. You still have to be attentive to the details. Do you recall that line in most job descriptions, “blah blah blah…attention to detail?” Well, the accuracy of your cover letter and resume are your first demonstrations of attention to detail.
