Back in the Twin Cities after a jaunt to L.A. It was late in the day but I had to make my coffee shop run for the week. Was looking for somewhere nearby and we happened up on Kopplin’s. Located on Marshall Avenue, less than a mile from the crossover to Lake Street (Minneapolis), Kopplin’s is in a great location with pretty good parking. Be careful about the time of day and the weather. On a hot day, parking could be a problem; the infamous Izzy’s Ice Cream is just next door.
I really like the vibe of Kopplin’s; but more than that, I really connected with their philosophy: Kopplin’s connects growers, makers, and community. These “three constituents drive the Kopplin’s menu selections and each aspect of their café to create a warm and valuable experience of Good Taste.”
Good Taste, Connecting with community…who could want more?
It’s obvious that Kopplin’s philosophy is not only put in words, but based on my experience, it’s exemplified in the way their team welcomes and serves the patrons.
It was a bit late in the day, so I chose not to have coffee; instead I had the wonderfully delicious yogurt and granola parfait. Topped with a bit of honey, it was a delightful indulgence; smooth, creamy, fresh! Therefore, I was not tempted to indulge in Izzy’s offerings. Don’t get me wrong, I love Izzy’s, but you know…
Anyway, on coffee shop etiquette, this is to offer you a little tip I gathered from my visit to Kopplin’s: Unique, individually and locally owned coffee shop’s owners are personally vested in their endeavor. Generally they are conscientious about where and how they obtain their products, often ensuring that they buy local and support fair trade. They seek to hire people who share their philosophy and exemplify their commitment to the philosophy in the way they serve patrons.
Sometimes it’s challenging to serve customers who are either rude, dismissive, and do not acknowledge the person serving them. When you are greeted with a smile and a hello, good morning, or welcome, return the greeting. It makes for a more pleasant experience. I know, I know—you may be feeling bad, you may have something heavy on your mind or you may be distracted in some way. But think about it, a smile, a welcoming hello and a commitment to make sure that YOU have the best experience possible could be just the thing you need to “have a nice day”!
